Earth Stewardship & Community:
A Series of Interfaith Forums
Sunday, February 17th, 1 p.m.
First Unitarian Church, 3114 Harney Street, Omaha

The Green Sanctuary Committee of First Unitarian Church of Omaha is sponsoring a series of interfaith forums on earth stewardship and community.
The first forum is:
"Reconnecting With and Changing Our Rural Landscapes Through Our Food Purchases"
Liz Sarno, UNL Extension Educator and President of the Nebraska Sustainable Agriculture Society, and John Quinn, UNL Graduate Student, will cover the basics of organic farming and its value to people and the land, how this growing movement will change your dinner plans, and how it is essential to the conservation of native bird communities.
* Organic farming is the fastest-growing sector of agriculture in America today.
* Nebraska has the 10th largest acreage of organic crops in the U.S.
In sponsoring this forum, the Green Sanctuary Committee of First Unitarian Church hopes to accomplish two goals:
1) provide an opportunity for city dwellers to learn more about sustainable farms in Nebraska and the health benefits to people and the environment.
2) find out how our Green Sanctuary Committee, and anyone else interested in doing so, can buy fresh foods directly from local farms to donate to the Omaha Food Bank and other agencies working on food insecurity in our community. Such partnerships are being formed all across America today, benefiting both local farmers and communities.
Any questions about the forums: 402-553-7423.

Nebraska Sustainable Agriculture Conference
February 1 & 2, 2008
Metropolitan Community College - Fort Omaha Campus
3000 Fort St., Omaha

"Locavore" is the 2007 Word of the Year, according to the Oxford Dictionary. It refers to the practice of choosing food that is from the local foodshed. What makes that important is that locally sourced food is healthier for you, the planet, the economy and family farms. City dwellers are reconnecting with the real source of food - the farm. And in some cases, learning how to grow some themselves. This two-day event, highlighted by an All-Nebraska Dinner on Friday prepared by the expert chefs, features speakers and workshops that will benefit farmers, gardeners, shoppers alike - anyone who eats should attend. Consumer groups join forces
to reverse pasteurization ruling
for raw almonds

by Mike Adams

NewsTarget.com printable article
Originally published October 22 2007

(NewsTarget) The U.S. government is once again working closely with powerful corporations to knowingly deliver a nutritionally deficient food supply to the American people. This most recent example concerns the new rules by the Almond Board of California (ABC) and backed by the USDA to mandate the pasteurization of all commercially-grown almonds in California with substances that include highly toxic propylene oxide (PPO). As reported by the Health Freedom Foundation, propylene oxide is so toxic that it was "...banned by both the National Hot Rod and American Motorcycle Racing Associations, where it had been used as a fuel before being deemed too dangerous."

NewsTarget has reported on this story for several months, urging consumers to help stop the ruling from going into place, but corporations won the initial round. Since September 1st, all the almonds commercially grown in California have been pasteurized or sanitized through either heat treatments or toxic chemical treatments.
